     Welded Metal Sculpture
I started my metal work by working as a
welder fitter for various marine construction
companies for 15 years.  That experience
allowed me to develop skills for working with
different types of metals and structures.  My
work took on a more creative direction
when I apprenticed with Gary Tabor, a
metal sculptor in Cataumet.
I began to create animals, attempting to
infuse them with an imminent sense of
motion.
Growing up on Cape Cod with a natural
curiosity about fish and wildlife, I started
making cormorants, crows, owls, heron,
starlings, deer and a variety of deep sea fish.
Mild steel is the basis for the work while
stainless steel is used to accentuate scales,
fins etc, because it won't rust.  The rest of
the body takes on a natural patina to
which finish is applied to maintain the
patina.  The stainless steel and glass that's
used both attract and reflect light such to
produce a sense of aliveness.
I have been deeply influenced by primitive
art styles and this comes through in the
simple but powerful quality of my pieces.
