Lee received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree
from Metropolitan State College in Denver,
Colorado. She works in a variety of media, and
has appeared in numerous open and juried shows
in galleries in Denver, Massachusetts, and Cape
Cod, including the Provincetown Art Association
and Higgins Art Gallery. Her work often centers
on humor and whimsy. She is an original member
of The Provincetown Artisan Cooperative,
founded in 2003.
An example of humor is found in her collection of
three-dimensional pieces called ‘Butt Is It Art?’
based on a series of related ass-puns. The Artisan
Coop carries a collection of pins and magnets,
including Kiss Ass, Candy Ass, Ass on the Line, Bad
Ass, Bum Steer, Hind Sight, Smart Ass, Cover My
Ass, Ass is Grass, and Honey Buns, among many
others. She also creates life sized wall sculpture
from the puns.
Recently, Lee has ventured into fabric art. She
started MerTales®, a business to produce and
market specialty baby buntings, sleep bags, and
lap quilts shaped like mermaids and other sea
creatures, accompanied by whimsically rhyming
tags. The quilts come in a wide variety of fabrics
from vintage to pop, and feature a fleece foot
pocket for warmth, enabling the wearer to make
the tail wave. Intended for lounging, the quilts
are a fanciful comfort on chilly days and nights,
and a delight to children. Matching MerMom
and MerBaby sets are also available. In 2004, a
mermaid costume she was commissioned to
design won ‘Queen of Carnival’ in Provincetown
on Cape Cod.
Lee paints canvas, chairs, blocks of wood, ceiling
fan blades, nearly anything that catches her
fancy. Her paintings are colorful folk like scenes,
and often have themes. In her series, The Blues
Sisters, for example, she depicts theatrical settings
such as “The Blues Sisters Clean The White House
For Extra Money.” Women’s issues are often the
focus.
Her most recent work is a whimsical book of rhyme
entitled, Tea Time with Mermaids, in which her
poems complement the paintings of mermaid
artist, Theresa LaBrecque. The book will be
released in early summer, 2007.
