Kate Greenhalgh
     Leave it to Weaver
Born and raised on Cape Cod Massachusetts, Kate
Greenhalgh’s textiles are inspired by the beauty of her
home. Many of Kate’s creations spring from nature,
especially her own flower garden, and a deep
connection to the ocean. Kate has also traveled
extensively throughout the United States, Europe, and
Mexico, recording her memories of her travels in
sketchbooks that she uses as references and inspiration
for her designs. These themes are seen as a thread
throughout all of her art, working from the desire to
created works of great beauty for personal adornment.
Kate works in various textures and types of silk scarves
including chiffon, crepe de chine, habotai, as well as
the newer devore and solid with some pieces having
an exquisite hand beaded detail on the ends of the
scarves. Each piece is unique and hand painted using
special silk dyes, working in a rich and vibrant color
palette. Her soft and tranquil colors as well as mix of
textures are evocative of the ocean that she draws
her inspiration from.
Working with fabric since the age of thirteen, Kate
studied textile design at the Rhode Island School of
Design and worked for the fashion industry in California
before starting her own business. She is also a certified
art teacher having taught in a public high school for
four years before being drawn back into her art. She
currently teaches at the Cape Cod Association and
has shown her work at some prestigious art festivals in
the Northeast as well as specialty stores nation-wide.
Kate has won a Merit Award from the Buyers Market of
American Craft.
"I am drawn to objects of great aesthetic beauty, be it
architecture in Italy, the lilies in my garden or richly
hued Guatemalan textiles. I love the fact that silk
painting is so immediate - it allows me to record my
impressions quickly and with ease to create wearable
art. Making a scarf is like painting an oblong canvas
that will be enjoyed and worn by the wearer to work,
birthdays, weddings, trips abroad and other important
events. I like to know that my work is out there in the
world!"
